Preserving a San Diego Landmark
The First Presbyterian Church of San Diego is one of the city's most architecturally significant religious landmarks. Founded in the 19th century, the church's sanctuary is a masterwork of Gothic Revival design — featuring soaring arched ceilings, ornate exposed timber framing, original stained glass windows, and richly detailed woodwork throughout.
ZMK Construction was engaged to perform careful interior restoration work within the historic sanctuary. The scope required a deep respect for the building's original materials and craftsmanship — restoring period details while ensuring the space continues to serve its congregation for generations to come.
Scope of Work
Ornate Woodwork Restoration
Careful restoration of the sanctuary's original carved and milled woodwork, including pew detailing, wainscoting, and decorative millwork throughout the nave.
Arched Ceiling Structure
Preservation and stabilization of the Gothic Revival arched ceiling system, maintaining the integrity of the exposed timber framing and plaster detailing.
Period Interior Details
Restoration of historic interior elements including balcony railings, column bases, and architectural trim consistent with the building's original character.
Stained Glass Surrounds
Repair and restoration of the window surrounds and arched openings framing the sanctuary's original stained glass installations.
