Importance of Flooring in a Kitchen Remodel

Don’t underestimate the importance kitchen flooring to the success of your overall kitchen remodel project.  Any experienced realtor can tell you that it is the kitchen and bathrooms that sell a home.  And one of the most important things when it comes to kitchens is the flooring. Choosing the right kitchen flooring will be crucial the overall success of our kitchen remodel project.

There are three things we should consider when determining which type of floor is best for your kitchen.  First, how hard are you and your family on the floors of your house?  Second, what are the budget constraints of your kitchen remodel project?  Now with those two factors in mind, now we can consider design.

Think beyond the kitchen as well. At some point, many homeowners realize that the floors in the rest of their home could use some work as well the floor in the kitchen. It’s always a good idea to choose flooring that will look great in adjoining areas of the home as well. For example, the perfect stone tiles for your kitchen might look too shabby for the living room or the bathroom down the hall.

Consider going natural with your floor material. Kitchen flooring is no different than any other material in the design process: what is in style changes over time. Today, natural looking floors are more popular for kitchen remodel project than a refined material that was all the rage in the past. Marble and stone have all the advantages of polished floor tiles and look natural as well.  Porcelain tiles are also available in earth tones and rougher finishes and may last longer and look better. Even wood flooring products have evolved to meet needs of today’s market place. If you choose real wood or imitation wood for your kitchen remodel, you might want to consider a darker wood with a more obvious grain pattern.

Don’t forget practical considerations in your choice of flooring material. Most important is your kitchen remodel project budget. Second, consider the effects of wear and tear over a long period of time. Children and pets tend to be hard on floors.  If that is going to be a factor in your kitchen remodel plans, consider a more durable type of stone tile. The right stone tiles can be (hard as rock) when they aren’t polished to a fine finish. These sturdy tiles do not show scratches and scuffs like other types of material will. Certainly stay away from light color wood floors if you have kids in the house.  Forget about porcelain as well. While some varieties porcelain are tougher than others, they can still chip easily.

If you are on a tight budget, look into laminate flooring for your kitchen remodel project. The right laminate product can make a beautiful floor and can imitate everything from hardwood to stone. It’s one of the toughest materials on the market today and it holds up well under the wear and tear of kids and pets. But best of all, it is a fraction of the cost of other high end flooring products. It’s not quite as fancy as some of the other options, but if you are on a tight budget it is an excellent all around choice for your kitchen remodel project.

Every project has unique factors that need to be taken into consideration. It is always wise to consult a qualified contractor before you begin any home improvement project.  Things like moisture and the condition your homes foundation need to be considered before any important decisions are made.
